Arizona governor vetoes bill to expand religious exemptions

? Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed a bill to expand religious exemptions under a state law requiring employers’ health-insurance plans to cover prescription drugs including contraceptives.

The contraceptive coverage law, passed last year and signed by Napolitano’s predecessor, allows exemptions for religious organizations that mainly hire people of the same faith and provide goods or services related to that faith.

The bill Napolitano vetoed would have expanded exemption to social-service agencies affiliated with religious groups. It was supported by Roman Catholic officials and opposed by Planned Parenthood.

Supporters said the bill enhanced constitutional protection of religious rights.
