FSHS second at LCC tourney

Even the math was tough Thursday at Lawrence Country Club.

“Quinn, what is 42 and 46 added together?” Free State coach Jack Schreiner asked while changing Quinn Klutman’s scorecard total from 89 to 88. “I hate it when I have to make marks because of their math. It’s just basic addition.”

Schreiner wasn’t the only one who needed extra strokes Thursday — overnight rain roughed up the LCC roughs and made the greens fast.

The result was higher scores and longer play for the four-team tournament Thursday. Still, Free State finished second behind Overland Park Aquinas (343) by just four strokes.

“It’s as hard as it can be,” Schreiner said of LCC’s course. “This is the time of year you don’t want to play this course.”

Despite some obstacles — three seniors (Kyle Capps, Aaron Webber and Tyler Yeakel) didn’t play — Free State had its best finish as a team when five of six Firebirds fired rounds in the 80s.

“It’s the first time we’ve done that, and our seniors weren’t playing?” Schreiner said.

Meanwhile, Lawrence High — also without its top golfers, who were in Hutchinson for a tournament — managed to take third with a total of 366 strokes.

Kit Swain fired a team-low 90 to lead a Lions squad that included Thomas Shmalberg (91), Daniel O’Connell (91) and Trent Santee (94).

Free State High sophomore Scott Moseley watches his approach shot. The Firebirds played host to the Free State quadrangular Thursday at Lawrence Country Club.

Free State’s Scott Moseley had the best day of any city golfer, shooting an 85.

“It went OK,” Moseley said. “It was pretty tough out there, but at least we didn’t have to battle the wind.”

Stephan Skepnek shot 86, Andy Frye fired 87, Klutman 88 and Michael Hrenchir 89 to round out the fivesome.

Aquinas freshman Michael McDonnell and sophomore Andrew Glenski fired 10-over-par 82s.

Lucky someone got something right, because even the math maestro himself had a miscue on the total tallies.

“Jack, 51 and 44 is 95 — not 96,” said Lawrence assistant Darrin Wegner, who was filling in for coach Ron Commons.

“You’re absolutely right,” Schreiner said after seeing his error. “Someone needs to take a math class.”
