6News video: Korean presents check for KU war memorial

Yong Kim likes the site Kansas University has selected for its Korean War Memorial.

“It’s a very beautiful place,” he said, looking over the spot along Memorial Drive near Potter Lake and the Campanile.

Yong, a Kansas City businessman, presented a check for $30,000 to Chancellor Robert Hemenway Wednesday morning to help pay for the memorial. It was the first major gift toward the project, which could cost about $300,000.

Yong said he especially was impressed with the progression along Memorial Drive, which includes the Kansas Union, Campanile and Vietnam War memorial. The union is a tribute to students, faculty and staff who fought in World War I, and the Campanile is a similar tribute to World War II veterans.

“It follows history,” Yong said.

No start date has been set for construction, but KU officials have said they would like to complete the new memorial by fall 2004.
