Overbrook will study abating utility fees to keep clinic open

? The Overbrook City Council will be asked tonight to abate sewer, water and trash pick-up fees for the town’s only medical clinic in an attempt to keep it from closing.

The request will be made as part of an effort to come up with $50,000 by July 31 to keep Kansas Medical Clinic from closing because of lack of revenue. So far about $24,500 has been raised, said Beth Pankratz, who will be among those making the request to the council.

Kansas Medical Clinic administrators, based in Topeka, have said they would keep the clinic open another six months if the $50,000 needed to subsidize operations during that time can be raised. That would buy the clinic’s supporters in Overbrook and the surrounding area time to come up with permanent financial support.

It would also allow time to promote the clinic to try to increase its daily average patient count to 18. That is the number of patients needed for the clinic to break even, administrators have said.

Check donations can be made to “Save OMC” and dropped off at Overbrook’s First Security Bank until 11 a.m. Saturday and Kansas State Bank until noon Saturday. Donations also can be mailed to Save Our Clinic, P.O. Box 1, Overbrook 66524. If you want to have your donation picked up and delivered, call Pankratz at (785) 665-7050.
