Roundup: Cyclones rally past KSU

Wildcats blow 16-point second-half lead, fall to ISU, 64-61

? Everything seemed so obvious. Kansas State finally was going to win a Big 12 Conference road game and Iowa State was headed for its fifth straight loss.

Then, somehow, it all got turned around.

Jake Sullivan scored 25 points, and Adam Haluska hit two critical free throws with 18 seconds left as Iowa State came from 16 down in the second half to beat Kansas State, 64-61, Saturday.

The Cyclones did it with top reserve Marcus Jefferson at home with his ailing mother, with Sullivan, Haluska and Tim Barnes playing all 40 minutes and with Haluska, Jackson Vroman and Jared Homan keeping themselves in the game after each got his fourth foul.

Oh yes, Barnes’ five three-pointers and season-high 23 points also were huge.

“It’s really almost miraculous to pull this game out,” Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy said. “I don’t know if I’ve had a nicer win since I’ve been here, under the circumstances with Marcus and his mother, the shortness of our team and the whole thing.”

Iowa State (13-10 overall, 3-9 Big 12) sent Kansas State to its 14th straight conference road loss, though it appeared the Wildcats (12-13, 3-9) were on their way to ending that streak when they opened a 37-21 lead early in the second half.

But Barnes hit three three-pointers to spark a 15-0 run that got Iowa State back in it, and the Cyclones rallied again after trailing 53-48 with 5:58 to play.

“This hurts a lot,” said Pervis Pasco, who led Kansas State with 15 points and 10 rebounds. “I hope the team feels the same way. This hurt because it was something we really needed.”

The Cyclones felt they needed it, too. Their season had soured after a 10-1 start, and their roster was shrinking, first with 7-foot-1 Chris Alexander leaving the team, then with Jefferson having to return home to East Chicago, Ind., Thursday night to be with his mother.

Eustachy used only one sub, Clint Varley, and he played only nine minutes.

Iowa State's Jake Sullivan -- who scored a game-high 25 points -- drives around Kansas State's Tim Ellis, left. The Cyclones rallied for a 64-61 victory Saturday in Ames, Iowa.

“This team’s been through a lot,” said Sullivan, who played with a sprained right ankle and has tendinitis in his right shoulder. “Marcus is gone. There’s been a lot of other issues. We just came together like no other.

“It was just absolutely unreal how hard we played and how much we came together this whole game.”

Once Iowa State had cut into the lead, the momentum swung back and forth. Kansas State led for the last time when Pasco scored inside to make it 59-58 with 2:38 left.

Haluska, who had missed his first eight shots, then drove the baseline and scored to put Iowa State ahead 60-59 with 2:23 to play, and Barnes followed with a steal and layup to make it 62-59.

Pasco dunked to cut the lead to 62-61, but he missed a short jumper the next time the Wildcats had the ball. They got another chance when Barnes missed, but they fumbled the ball out of bounds scrambling for the rebound, giving it back to Iowa State. Gilson DeJesus then fouled Haluska, and the freshman swished both free throws to make it 64-61.

DeJesus had to force up a long three-point try with time running out. The buzzer sounded before anyone could control the rebound.

Texas Tech 70,

Texas A&M 69

Lubbock, Texas — Andre Emmett, coming back from a one-game suspension, scored 26 points as Texas Tech beat Texas A&M.

Tech led most of the game, but the Aggies crept back, and Will Chavis hit the first of two free throws with 4.9 seconds remaining to win it for Tech (15-8, 5-7).

Aggie Bernard King missed a last-second shot from midcourt.

Tech built its biggest lead of 10 points at 47-37 with 14:47 remaining.

But the Aggies (13-10, 5-7) clawed their way back, using a 19-7 run to take a 56-54 lead with 6:50 remaining in the game. The run included three three-pointers — one by Antoine Wright and two by Kevin Turner.

Tech answered with a layup and a slam dunk by Emmett off a lob pass from Mickey Marshall to regain the lead 61-60 with 3:32 remaining in the game.

The score was tied four times in the last three minutes at 61, 63, 67 and 69, and the lead changed hands three times in the final two minutes.

Baylor 78, Nebraska 64

Waco, Texas — Lawrence Roberts had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and R.T. Guinn added 15 points and 11 boards as Baylor beat Nebraska.

John Lucas added 16 for Baylor (13-10, 4-8), which has won three straight Big 12 games for the first time since 1998. Nebraska (9-16, 1-11) has lost nine straight.

Brian Conklin led Nebraska with 15 points, all scored on three-pointers. He was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Colorado 89 , Missouri 68

Boulder, Colo. — Blair Wilson hit six three-pointers and scored 26 points as Colorado beat Missouri to add to its list of impressive home victories.

Colorado (16-9, 6-6) has won 10 straight at home, tying a school record set in 1979-80, and four of six overall.

The Buffaloes also ended an eight-game losing streak against Missouri (16-7, 7-5), adding the Tigers to an impressive run at home that includes victories over Texas and Kansas University.

Stephane Pelle had 18 points and 18 rebounds, and David Harrison added 15 points and 11 rebounds as Colorado improved its home record to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

Rickey Paulding had 22 points and Arthur Anderson 17 to lead Missouri, which lost for the third time in eight games.
