Waverly spoils Seabury’s Senior Nights

All that hustle finally got the best of Kris Finger.

After diving for loose balls, forcing several turnovers and picking up a few silly fouls in the process, Finger fouled out with 32 seconds remaining in Seabury Academy’s 43-29 boys basketball loss Friday to Waverly at the East Lawrence Recreation Center.

Finger, a senior, finished with seven points, five fouls and, likely, a whole bunch of bumps and bruises.

“There’s something that most people have that he doesn’t,” Seabury coach Marcus Heckman said. “For him, it’s just a reaction to put himself in a tough situation.”

Finger joined seniors Aaron Landis and Sean Hill in playing their last official home games as Seahawks. Seabury starts Class 1A regionals Tuesday at South Junior High against Wetmore.

Heckman said Friday’s game showed how good his squad can be.

“We controlled the tempo of the game, which was the key,” Heckman said. “I think this was easily Waverly’s lowest point total of the year. They’re scoring 80 to 100 in a lot of games.”

At the onset, it was Waverly vs. Finger.

Finger scored the first seven points for Seabury.

“It started out pretty good,” Finger said. “I was getting in the lane and making some baskets.”

Seabury guard Kris Finger, left, soars past Waverly's Dustin Chapman in the Seahawks' 43-29 loss. Finger had seven points during Friday's Senior Night game for Seabury at the East Lawrence Recreation Center.

Lately, Heckman said, Finger has added offense to his game.

“That’s something that’s been new to him the second half of the season,” he said. “His scoring average has probably doubled the last month.”

Waverly pulled ahead in the second quarter when Seabury (6-10) managed just two points, giving the Bulldogs a 22-11 halftime lead. The Seahawks cut the lead to 22-14 early in the third, but never got closer.

“If we would’ve done a better job of finishing and shot the ball a little better, that game would’ve been close down the stretch,” Heckman said. “You never know what could happen then.”

Except for a Steven King layup, Landis and Finger combined for all of Seabury’s points through three quarters. Landis finished with a team-high 11 points.

“It’s all on regionals now,” Finger said. “We’re going to go out hard and win the first game and try to go on further.”

Waverly girls 63, Seabury 15

Seabury Academy's Lindsey Ahlen shoots in two of her nine points against Waverly. Seabury absorbed a 63-15 loss Friday night at East Lawrence Center.

Seabury honored the girls’ lone senior, Janie Schneider, but a sluggish first quarter doomed the Seahawks.

Seabury (4-11) finally got the motor running after coach Tracy Kitson gave the team a talk after the first quarter, but Waverly never gave up.

“We have been a slow-starting team,” Kitson said. “We just talked about some specific things that we had discussed before the game that they weren’t really executing.”

Schneider, a point guard, took three second-half shots, but was held scoreless. Near the end, a boisterous student section chanted Schneider’s name.

“Being such a small school, everyone knows you,” Schneider said. “For them to come out and support me, it’s a great feeling.”

Freshman Lindsey Ahlen led the Seahawks with nine points. She had all six of Seabury’s first-half scores.

“I think we were probably a little apprehensive at first,” Schneider said. “We knew this team would be pretty good. We had to get a feel for what it was going to be like.”

Seabury starts Class 1A regionals on Monday, taking on Highland at South Junior High. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
