Student still in critical condition

Police continue investigation into one-car injury accident on KU campus

A Kansas University student remained in critical condition Tuesday after a one-car accident last week on campus.

Paul Hindley, 20, an Overland Park sophomore, was a passenger in a car that struck a light pole and a tree on Mississippi Street north of Jayhawk Boulevard. He is at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.

The driver of the car, Ryan Vandover, 21, a St. Louis sophomore, was not hurt.

He was taken to the Douglas County Jail where his blood alcohol content was tested, said Lt. Schuyler Bailey of the KU Public Safety Office. Vandover then was released.

An investigation is continuing and charges are possible, Bailey said.

Stacey Jacobson, 19, a KU freshman, said she and a friend were driving in the area when they saw the car strike the pole and the tree. They stopped to help, Jacobson said.

Hindley was bleeding badly and couldn’t talk but was conscious, Jacobson said. She said it took rescue workers about 45 minutes to free Hindley from the wrecked car.

“It was not a pretty sight at all,” Jacobson said. “I was trying to comfort him.”

A second passenger, Ian Schuster, 21, a Glendale, Mo., junior, also was injured but was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released.
