Mother charged with murder in deaths of children left in car

? A mother has been charged with first-degree murder for leaving her two children inside her sweltering car for more than three hours while she went to have her hair done, police said.

Tarajee Maynor, 25, of Detroit remained jailed without bond Monday.

Her daughters, 10-month-old Acacia and 3-year-old Adonnis, died Friday after being left alone in her black compact car for more than three hours, police said.

“Those children really suffered,” said Oakland County Assistant Prosecutor Deborah Carley. “The mere image of her sitting in that salon, getting her hair done, reading a magazine while they were suffering makes me sick.”

Maynor was arraigned Sunday on two counts each of first-degree murder and felony child abuse. She is due back in court July 10. If convicted, she faces automatic life in prison without possibility of parole.

She has not yet obtained an attorney, police said.

Southfield Police Chief Joseph Thomas said the windows on the car were rolled up when the children were left. The temperature Friday was in the 80s, according to the National Weather Service.

Autopsy results showed the children died of hyperthermia, said William Presley, an investigator with the Oakland County medical examiner’s office.

Maynor first told police that she had been abducted, raped and then returned to her car to find her children sleeping, police said.

Police said she later changed her story, telling investigators that she stopped to have her hair done and left the children. When she returned more than three hours later, she found them dead, police said.

Maynot said she then drove around for about three hours so that she could think of a story for authorities, police said.

“That’s what’s even worse she drove around with them, trying to conjure up an excuse so she could get out of it,” Thomas said.
