Fort Riley has additional turkey season rules

Spring turkey season will run statewide April 10 to May 19 and special rules will be in effect on Fort Riley land near Junction City.

All individuals age 12 on or before April 5 are eligible to apply for a Fort Riley spring turkey permit. According to Army regulations, “completion of a NRA hunter safety course or equivalent is mandatory before individuals participate in hunting activities on Army land.”

Fort Riley hunters will also need a valid Kansas hunting license and a Unit 2 spring turkey permit.

A total of 120 Fort Riley turkey permits will be available for the regular season. An additional 60 permits will be available for the April 5-7 youth turkey hunt.

Of the 120 regular season permits, 60 will be valid for Fort Riley hunting areas north of the line formed by the northern boundary of hunting areas G, H, E, I and the Impact Area. The remaining 60 permits will be valid for all other post hunting areas (hunting areas 1-29 and A-I).

The Fort Riley turkey season will be further divided into two segments April 10-29 and April 30-May 19. Half of the permitees will hunt the first segment and the other half will hunt the second segment. Applicants may not hunt during both regular season segments.

Kansas Unit 2 spring turkey permits are available over-the counter at Wildlife and Parks regional offices, state park offices and county clerk offices.

Applications for Fort Riley turkey permits will be accepted at the Fort Riley DES Conservation Division Office, 1020 Huebner Rd., starting Monday and ending on Feb. 22.

Hunters must check in and out each day they hunt at one of the nine Fort Riley hunter check stations. Hunters may hunt only in areas listed at the check stations as open for shotgun hunting on the particular day they wish to hunt.

Fort Riley regulations require that all firearms brought onto post be registered with the Provost Marshal’s Office.

Firearms must be registered by the owners regardless of military affiliation prior to bringing the firearms on post.
