Chris Bellinder, Lawrence, is a member of the Luther College Norsemen for the 2002-2003 academic year. Luther College Norsemen is the first-year men’s vocal ensemble at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Bellinder is the son of David and Sonya Bellinder, Lawrence.

Four area residents will receive bachelor’s degrees in nursing during a ceremony Friday at Washburn University, Topeka. Those who will receive a degree are Bella Birdashaw and Kelly Howe, both of Lawrence; Julie Cook, Eudora; and Melinda Legg, Tonganoxie.

Ryan Cooley, DeSoto, and Robert Garven, Lawrence, were among the Kansas State University Army ROTC cadets who recently competed in the U.S. Army Ranger Challenge. The event is a military skills and leadership competition in Camp Dodge, Iowa.

The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Assn. had a recital Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center. Students who performed were Amy Brown, Bryson Hewins, Clare Hove, Erin Ice, Alita Joseph, Dravid Joseph, Emily Keizer, Patrick Keizer, Hannah Lusk, Jeff Miller, Mariah Saylor, Bethany Saylor, Tucker Sutter, Marley Sutter, Andrew Woodhead and Ian Zylstra.
The students represent the studios of Patricia Burgstahler, Elaine de San Miguel, Sue Evans and Sylvia Frank.

Gabe Lewis-O’Connor, a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School, recently appeared in three performances of a production of G.F. Handel’s opera “Rinaldo” at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. Lewis-O’Connor sang the role of Argante. He is the son of James Lewis and Nancy O’Connor, Lawrence.

Denise Salsbury, a former Lawrence teacher, will receive a doctorate in curriculum and instruction/social studies Friday from Kansas State University. Salsbury is an assistant professor in the elementary education department at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. She taught fourth grade from 1989 to 2000 at Quail Run School in Lawrence.
Her family will have an open house from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 14 at the home of Phil and Pat DeLaTorre, Lawrence. Former co-workers, students and friends are invited.

Kristen Berry recently was announced as the Kansas State Junior Grange Princess for the coming year at the 131st annual convention in Emporia. She is the daughter of Jack and Karla Berry, Wellsville. Kristen is in the eighth grade at Wellsville Middle School.

The Kansas State Grange has announced recipients of the Brey Memorial Fund Scholarship for 2002. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of Grange, community and church activities with additional credit given for agriculture-related fields of study.
This year’s area recipients are Aimee Damashek, Nicole Damashek, Josh Douglass, Bobby Allison-Gallimore, Jason Klenklen and Colleen Kramer.
Aimee and Nicole Damashek attend Kansas University. Josh Douglass is a member of New Century Grange in Lawrence. Bobby Allison-Gallimore attends KU’s School of Law. Jason Klenklen, son of Kevin and Jamie Klenklen of Ozawkie, is a member of Pleasant View Grange in Oskaloosa. Colleen Kramer, daughter of W.J. and Susan Kramer of Valley Falls, is a member of Pleasant View Grange in Oskaloosa.

The Kansas State University’s American Institute of Chemical Engineers student chapter recently received honors at the annual American Institute of Chemical Engineers National Conference in Indianapolis. The chapter’s team placed fourth in its first regional competition and sixth out of 35 teams in its first national Chem-E-Car competition. Tyler McGown, Tonganoxie, is a member of the team.

Chris Gilmore, Lawrence, is a member of the Luther College Concert Band for the 2002-2003 academic year. Gilmore, a 2001 graduate of Free State High School, is the son of Charles and Marcia Gilmore, Lawrence.

Tim Bradley, Lawrence, is a member of the Jazz II and Jazz III ensembles at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. Bradley plays the piano.

Kelly Moore, Lawrence, was a top 10 finalist in the amateur jumping class at the 2002 American Quarter Horse Assn. World Championship show Nov. 9-23 in Oklahoma City. She rode St. Louie Special, a chestnut gelding.
