Two plead guilty to charges in Rinke slaying

Two people arrested last spring in the 1999 shooting death of Clarence Rinke pleaded guilty Thursday to charges in Jefferson County District Court.

Collin E. Cady, 33, McLouth, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated burglary. Cady had been charged with first-degree murder, but Assistant County Attorney Vic Braden reduced the charge on Wednesday.

Charolette M. Bennett, 29, Lawrence pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aiding and abetting aggravated burglary. She had been charged with aiding and abetting aggravated robbery.

Cady and Bennett testified last week against Noah J. Gleason, 43, rural Lawrence. A jury found Gleason guilty of first-degree murder. Cady and Bennett said Gleason planned to rob Rinke of cash and marijuana and admitted they assisted him.

Rinke died of a shotgun blast the night of Oct. 14, 1999. Rinke entered his home and found Gleason and Cady there. Rinke struggled for a shotgun carried by Cady and the gun went off.

Cady, Bennett and Gelason will be sentenced Sept. 5 by Judge Gary Nafziger.
