KU netters advance

? No. 3 seed Kansas dumped No. 6 Kansas State, 4-1, on Friday in the Big 12 women’s tennis quarterfinals at the Texas A&M Tennis Center.

In No. 2 doubles, sophomore Emily Haylock and freshman Paige Brown defeated K-State’s Kathy Chuda and Paulina Castillejos, 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, senior Cheryl Mallaiah and freshman Aurelie Bejar defeated Kansas State’s Petra Sedlmajerova and Maria Rosenberg, 8-4.

“We came out ready to win the doubles point today and it helped us out a lot in this match,” KU head coach Kilmeny Waterman said. “I think that winning this match lets us get those nerves out of the way and now we can prepare for tomorrow and be ready to play.”

Kansas State’s Alena Jecminkova and Andrea Cooper won the No. 1 doubles match over KU twins Courtney and Kristen Steinbock, 8-1.

In singles, Kansas won three matches to clinch the team victory. KU’s No. 4 player Paige Brown beat Maria Rosenberg, 6-3, 6-2; No. 5 Aurelie Bejar defeated Andrea Cooper, 6-1, 0-6, 6-1; and No. 6 Kim Lorenz defeated Castillejos, 6-1, 6-3.

“Winning the match, 4-1, gives us a lot of confidence for tomorrow,” Lorenz said. “I think that we will be really pumped and ready to play.”

Kansas (16-5 overall, 10-2 Big 12) will play the Texas A&M-Oklahoma winner today in the semifinals.
