Birds clip KC with five-run 10th – Orioles 10, Royals 5

? Tony Batista made the most of his two hits.

Batista hit a tiebreaking two-run single in Baltimore’s five-run 10th inning and a two-run homer in the first as the Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals, 10-5, Friday night.

Royals catcher Brent Mayne stretches as he tries to tag out Baltimore's David Segui. Segui scored on a single by Jeff Conine. The Orioles defeated the Royals, 10-5 in 10 innings, Friday night at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

“Both were fastballs,” Batista said. “The home run was a little down and the base hit was a little high. I hit both of them pretty good.”

The Orioles rode Batista’s four RBIs and Jeff Conine’s four hits to overcome shaky pitching by their first two pitchers. Sean Douglass walked six batters and allowed three runs in 323 innings. Travis Driskill allowed two runs and five hits in 213 innings of relief.

“(Douglass) didn’t have his breaking pitch, he didn’t have his fastball, he didn’t have anything and he was all over the place,” Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove said. “He just looked completely out of sync.

“He’s better than that.”

The Royals took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning, but could not manage another run against the Orioles’ bullpen.

Buddy Groom (1-0) pitched 123 perfect innings for the win.

“The bullpen really has thrown the ball well for us all year,” Hargrove said. “They’ve been the strength of this club. We’ve really only been out of two games. The others have been two-, three- or four-run games. Our bullpen has really kept us in those games and given us a chance to win them.”

The same can’t be said for the Royals’ bullpen, which blew its fourth save in six chances this season. Jason Grimsley (1-1) allowed five runs four earned and five hits in the 10th inning.

“Grims had a tough night,” Kansas City manager Tony Muser said. “The ball was up and flat. He couldn’t get it down.

“We had a bad outing out of the bullpen and a rough first inning out of our starter. Other than that, we played pretty good baseball.”

With one out in the 10th, Chris Singleton reached with a single off the glove of Grimsley. Conine then bounced a double over the left-field wall.

After Jay Gibbons was walked intentionally, Batista lined a two-run single to center. Geronimo Gil added an RBI single and Jerry Hairston hit a two-run single to make it 10-5.

The Orioles scored four runs in the first inning against Dan Reichert on a two-run single by Conine and Batista’s fourth home run. But Douglass gave two of the runs right back in the bottom half on Michael Tucker’s first homer.

Douglass struggled at the beginning of each inning, walking the leadoff batter in each of the first three innings. He walked six batters in the first three innings. He left with a 4-2 lead and two outs in the fourth inning.

“I just tried to battle my best,” Douglass said. “Obviously, I wasn’t trying to walk guys. My goodness, I was wondering myself, ‘What’s going on?’ Hopefully it will get better for my next start.”

Notes: Baltimore 1B David Segui left the game after Royals catcher Brent Mayne stepped on his hand on a play at the plate. He was taken to a hospital for X-rays, though Hargrove did not think it was broken. Segui batted once more after the injury but felt pain on his swing. Two Royals went to the hospital for precautionary X-rays. Chuck Knoblauch injured his elbow on a checked swing, and Grimsley took a line drive off the pinky on his left hand. This was the first extra-inning game of the season for the Royals, and the second for Baltimore.
