Lawrence musicians to be inducted into Kansas Music Hall of Fame on Saturday
Multiple musicians from Lawrence will be inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Ric Averill, a longtime artistic director and performer at the Lawrence Arts Center, and the Lawrence-based Latino music band Son Venezuela are part of a class of six musicians who will be inducted into the hall of fame during a ceremony Saturday evening at downtown Lawrence’s Liberty Hall.
As an artist, Averill has had his work performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, including a youth opera based on the fable of The Emperor’s New Clothes. He’s also composed music for dramatic ballets and for a multitude of theatrical productions, according to information from the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. Averill was the longtime artistic director of the Lawrence Arts Center, where his works, including “The Nutcracker: A Kansas Ballet,” continue to be performed.
Son Venezuela has been entertaining crowds with Caribbean music since 1994. The nine-piece band frequently plays salsa, merengue, calypso and a variety of other music styles in venues throughout the region. The band will be hosting a free outdoor concert in downtown Lawrence on June 29 in the parking lot south of The Granada to commemorate their induction into the hall of fame.
Other inductees in the 2024 hall of fame class are: Karrin Allyson, Great Bend/Kansas City; Angela Hagenbach, Kansas City; The Scamps, Kansas City; and Rick Faris, Topeka.
The induction ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Liberty Hall in a ticketed event.
