Two Lawrence groups will host a guided walking tour of a historic neighborhood that provides insight into the city’s Black history.
Lawrence Preservation Alliance and the Lawrence NAACP Branch will host a walking tour Sunday, Nov. 2, through the city’s Pinkney neighborhood that will feature stops at select historic homes in the 500 block of Louisiana and 400 blocks of Indiana and Illinois streets.
The tour will be led by historian Jeanne Klein, NAACP president Ursula Minor, KU architecture professor Amy Van de Riet and LPA tour producer Dennis Brown, who will share contextual insights about the tour area with guests.
The tour plans to stop at three neighborhoods sites where speakers will provide a presentation about the historic importance, and tour participants will also receive a written handout with historical information about the area.
Stops on the tour will include the Dillard house at 520 Louisiana St. and the house at 401 Indiana St. which entertainer and Broadway producer George “Nash” Walker had built for his mother, Alice.
The tour of Pinkney is the second Black History Walking Tour hosted by the Lawrence NAACP and LPA. Their first tour, held in fall 2023, covered an area of East Lawrence.
Tickets for the event cost $10 and must be purchased from the LPA’s website, lawrencepreservation.org, in advance ahead of the Nov. 2 event. The tour will meet at tCommunity Connections at Pinckney, 810 W. Sixth St., and will run from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
