Joanne Price

Joanne (Kinney) Price, age 80, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2018. She was born in Peoria, Illinois to Sophia (Chelovich) Kinney and Thomas Kinney in 1938. She attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School and the Academy of Our Lady High School in Peoria. Her circle of friends in high school included a "spread" of girls called the D.I.N.K.S., an acronym whose meaning has been lost in the mists of time but remained friends throughout her long life. After high school, Joanne studied nursing in Rockford, IL, at St. Anthony’s School of Nursing. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1959. Married to John L. Price on June 10, 1961, Joanne started a family of four sons, who survive her today: Stephen Michael (Cameo), of Grand Rapids, MI; Jonathan Leyland, of Rochester Hills, MI; Thomas Robert, of Grand Rapids, MI; and Matthew David (Karen), of Simpsonville, SC. Joanne dedicated her married life to her family, including nine grandchildren: John Leyland II, Kayla Anne, Janet Elizabeth, Catherine Marie, Alicia Alexandra, Meaghan Sue, Kaitlyn Renee, Abigail Joanne, and Jessica Lauren; and her great grandchildren: Adam and Benjamin Labadie. During her busy life, the project she remembered with the greatest fondness was as one of the founders of a group who labored to bring Good Shepherd Hospital into existence in Barrington, IL, where she resided from 1964 to 1976. She was president of the group and worked to establish the money-raising resale store called Catchpenny in the Village of Barrington. Life took Joanne to live in Michigan, Illinois, Kansas, and Ohio in the USA, as well as in Wales, United Kingdom, which remained happy memories all her life. She was fond of travel and enjoyed a number of sailing adventures in Europe, the Caribbean, and on the Great Lakes. Joanne’s younger brother, John "Jack" Kinney and his wife, Lori, live in Peoria, IL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 18, 11 AM, at St. Robert’s of Newminster Catholic Church (6477 Ada Dr. SE, Ada, MI 49301), with Rev. Leonard Sudlik as Celebrant. Visitation will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546) on Sunday, June 17, from 6-8 PM and at the church on Monday from 10-11 AM one hour prior to the service.
