Edna M. Zillner

Mass of Christian burial for Edna M. Zillner, 109, of Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, followed by burial at Holy Family Cemetery in Eudora. She passed away on Thursday, Feb 23, 2017 at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living. Edna was born August 3, 1907 in Scott, OK, the daughter of John and Anna (Ziesneis) Sommer and moved to Eudora, KS when she was 6 years old. She graduated from Eudora HS in 1924. At 16 she was granted her “teaching certificate” and taught for a year in a one room school and later worked at the Eudora Department Store. On June 1, 1927 she married Clement “Clem” A Zillner at Holy Family Church, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Ethel (Jennings). Edna and Clem were married for 63 years. They moved to Lawrence, with daughter, Virginia in 1940, later welcomed children Paul and Joyce. She worked as a “lunch lady” at CJHS for 27 years. She loved vegetable and flower gardening, canning, cooking, quilting, sewing, music, singing (especially with “Elvis), sauerkraut dinners, friends, family and her adopted family at Pioneer Ridge. She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Halderman, of Lawrence, and ten grandchildren and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clem in 1990, brother Paul Sommer, sister Ethel Jennings, son Paul Zillner in 1998, and daughter Virginia Grob in 2009. A rosary will be recited at 6;00 p.m. on Monday, February 27th followed by a visitation until 8:00 PM at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
