Smith

Glee S. Smith, Jr. and Geraldine Buhler Smith recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They were married at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence on December 14, 1943. Both are graduates of the University of Kansas. The first two years of their married life were spent in various Army Air Corps bases in Texas, Massachusetts and Louisiana, where Glee was a navigation instructor.
Following service in the Army Air Corps, they returned to Lawrence where Smith received his J.D. from KU Law School. They moved to Larned, KS, where Glee practiced law first with Wildgen and Smith, and later with the Smith, Burnett and Larson Law Firm for a total of 48 years.
Glee served in the State Senate for 16 years and on the Board of Regents for 8 years. He also served on the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association and is a Lifetime Commissioner of the National Conference on Uniform State Laws. Both are ordained Elders and Deacons in the Presbyterian Church, and participated in many civic activities in the Larned area.
The couple moved to Lawrence in 1991, where Glee became Of Counsel with the Barber Emerson Law Firm. They are active in the KU Alumni Association, the KU Law Society, as well as being Friends of the Dole Center, KU Libraries, the Lied Center and the KU Theater.
Their children were in Lawrence for a celebration for their 70th anniversary. They are G. Sid Smith, III of Alexandria, VA; Dr. and Mrs. Steve Smith of Omaha, NE; and Drs. Susan and James Moeser of Chapel Hill, NC. They also have 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
