Douglas County adds another COVID-19 death, but number of new reported cases drops

Douglas County added another coronavirus death Monday, but the number of new cases reported to Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health since its last update is significantly lower than the number added between previous recent reports.

The county’s latest death was a man in the 65-74 age category and brings the total number of deaths since March of 2020 to 121. Meanwhile, the number of new COVID-19 cases added Sunday and Monday was just 159. The county’s cumulative case count since the start of the pandemic has risen by 402 cases between last Friday and Monday’s updated statistics from the health department; that figure now sits at 22,048.

Compared to the previous update — 846 new COVID-19 cases across two days before the weekend — the latest new-case count marks a relative lull on that front.

However, the county still has 6,346 active COVID-19 cases, and 25 inpatients are currently hospitalized at LMH Health. The county’s 14-day rolling average daily case count also remains high and sits at 309 as of Monday afternoon.

Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health continues to encourage community members to follow updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, and also urges them to get vaccinated. The health department administers vaccinations and booster doses at the clinic on the first floor of the Community Health Building, 200 Maine St., for adults and eligible children from 12 to 17 years old.
