A power outage has led to the cancellation of all classes at West Middle School today, the Lawrence school district announced this morning.

A district spokeswoman said Evergy, the electric utility in Lawrence, was unable to say when power would be restored to West Middle School, 2700 Harvard Road, thus district officials decided to cancel classes for all of May 12.

The district said that Hillcrest and Sunset Hill elementary schools also were impacted by power issues, but classes would be in session. Both of those elementary schools had partial power, including power for all safety systems, food services and transportation areas, according to a message on the district’s website.

Classes at other schools throughout the district are proceeding as scheduled.

The district did not provide any information on the cause of the power outage. Evergy’s power outage map, as of about 8:30 a.m. today, also did not list the area as being without power.
