Lawrence sanitation crews maneuver slick streets to pick up trash in the Oread neighborhood Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 in a light blowing snow.

The winter storm is delaying trash pick up and other sanitation services in Lawrence this week.

All residential trash and recycling services will be one day later than normal this week, City of Lawrence officials announced Monday morning. The change begins tomorrow, meaning that households that normally set their trash and recycling out for Tuesday service should now do so on Wednesday instead, for example.

Even with the change in schedule, the city warned that there are some locations that may still be inaccessible for their trash trucks this week due to snow drifts and icy terrain.

“Our Solid Waste teams are facing extremely cold and difficult conditions, and their safety is our top priority,” said Ron Green, General Manager of Solid Waste. “We’re proud of their dedication and thankful for the community’s understanding and support.”

The city has also suspended its yard waste and Christmas tree collection services for the week. Those services are scheduled to resume on Jan. 13.

Construction sites and other locations that use the city’s roll off service — large dumpsters for a specific location — may experience some delays in service this week. The city has cancelled all roll off service for Tuesday and will evaluate whether to resume the service on Wednesday and thereafter.
