Lawrence, all of Douglas County and most of northeast Kansas is in a winter weather advisory until noon today due to overnight icing of roads and sidewalks.
Between 5:30 a.m. and about 11 a.m., 29 accidents had been reported due to icy road conditions, a spokesman with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said. Most were non-injury accidents, but one accident on U.S. Highway 40 near Big Springs in western Douglas County did result in an injury and an individual being transported to LMH Health.
The National Weather Service in Topeka said ice accumulations should be no more than a light glaze, but that will be enough to make sidewalks, roads, and especially bridges and overpasses slick on Wednesday morning.
There were vehicles off the side of the road on Kansas Highway 10 on Wednesday morning. At about 8:30 a.m., a spokesman with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office told the Journal-World a portion of K-10 was closed due to icy conditions. The eastbound lanes of K-10 between Haskell and E 1900 Road is currently shut down due to several vehicles that slipped in icy conditions and are blocking traffic just southeast of Lawrence. It was unclear when the road would reopen. The westbound lanes of the highway remain open. UPDATE: As of 11 a.m., the sheriff’s office was reporting that the closed section of K-10 had reopened.
The National Weather Service forecast for Wednesday says freezing rain or drizzle in Lawrence is possible until about 11 a.m.. Rain or drizzle is expected to continue, but temperatures later in the day are forecasted to rise to about 40 degrees. Lows on Wednesday night are expected to be right near the freezing mark.
