Most school districts in the area have cancelled classes for Tuesday as a winter storm pelted the region overnight with snow.
Lawrence, Baldwin City, Eudora and Perry-Lecompton public school districts all have canceled classes for today. In addition, private school Bishop Seabury Academy also has canceled classes today. The University of Kansas already was scheduled to be out of session, as the university’s winter break does not end until mid-January.
Lawrence and Douglas County remain in a Winter Storm Warning until noon today. The National Weather Service has forecasted an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible. Wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour also are forecasted. The weather service warns travel could be very difficult with blowing snow reducing visibility and creating some snow drifts.
Other closings or delays of note for Tuesday include:
• Lawrence Meals on Wheels will not deliver meals.
• Lawrence Public Library is closed for the entire day.
• Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence is closed.
• Most state agencies in Topeka have been closed for the day by the governor.
• Independence Inc. has closed its offices for the day, although staff will still be available by phone.
• Cottonwood Inc. has closed its offices and day services for the day. Residents of Cottonwood Residential Services will receive services in their group homes today.
• Most Lawrence Parks and Recreation centers are closed until 10 a.m. today. The Community Building at 115 W. 11th Street opened at its normal 8 a.m. schedule. Parks and Recreation classes and programs scheduled before 1 p.m. today have been canceled.
