KU on Wheels extends route to serve GSP/Corbin residence halls

KU on Wheels is extending one of its bus routes, without spending any more money. The transit system, which serves Kansas University, now provides evening and night service for residents of GSP and Corbin residence halls at the northern edge of campus. The system’s Rec Center/JRP Circulator bus (that’s route 42) now makes stops at GSP/Corbin during the hours of 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. GSP and Corbin had been the only two residence halls not served by the nighttime buses until this week, when the service was extended. After 5:30 p.m., the circulator now runs a figure-eight route on half-hour intervals: starting from the residence halls, the bus runs up Mississippi Street to Jayhawk Boulevard, then west to Naismith Drive, then south to the Student Recreation Center, back north to connect with Sunnyside Avenue, then east to Sunflower Road and then back onto Jayhawk Boulevard to head east toward the Kansas Union and on back to GSP/Corbin.KU on Wheels decided to add the service after receiving calls from some parents of the halls’ residents. The parents were concerned that their daughters didn’t have a safe, reliable to get to and from campus at night. Now, without spending any more money, KU on Wheels is making such transportation available to any student with a valid KUID.”This is something we can do to make something work,” said Jessica Mortinger, a graduate student and former KU on Wheels coordinator now interning for KU Parking & Transit. “And this can be very successful for those girls.”More information about KU on Wheels is available at the system’s online site, www.kuonwheels.ku.edu.
