Traffic delays to come along I-70 in Topeka

Drivers heading to Topeka on Interstate 70 will encounter some road work - weather permitting, as always - that could slow them down in the coming days.Here's a rundown of the scheduled projects, taken from information provided by the fine folks at the Kansas Department of Transportation:¢ On Thursday, Oct. 2, the bridge ramp from westbound Interstate 470 to westbound I-70 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for repairs to the bridge deck. Drivers heading west on I-70 will detour eastbound on I-70 to the Wanamaker Road exit, where they then will head back onto I-70 west from Wanamaker Road.¢ Also Thursday, Oct. 2, the eastbound left lane on I-70 will be closed from First Street to the Adams Street/Branner Trafficway interchange between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for drain flushing and other minor roadwork.Some advice applicable in both cases: "Drivers should expect minor delays and allow extra time for travel as needed," said Kim Qualls, a KDOT spokeswoman.¢ On the weekends of Oct. 4-5, and Oct. 11-12, crews are scheduled to repair both the eastbound and westbound I-70 bridges that cross over Third and Fourth streets in Topeka. Repairs on the bridge deck will include the removal and sandblasting of small areas of failed polymer overlay, followed by replacement of new polymer overlay material on the damaged areas.¢ On Saturday, Oct. 4, the eastbound right lane of I-70 will be closed from First Street east to just east of the Third Street overpass. The exit ramp from eastbound I-70 onto Third Street also will be closed. On Sunday, Oct. 5, the eastbound left lane of I-70 will be closed through the same area. The lane/ramp closures will begin at approximately 8 a.m. and will reopen to all traffic at approximately 7:30 p.m. each day.¢ Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, varying daily lane closures will occur on I-70 for a repair project on the southbound U.S. Highway 75 to eastbound I-70 bridge ramp in Topeka. The repairs started Sept. 22. The lane closures are being implemented to protect traffic on I-70 from being hit by possible falling debris from the patching process on the bridge ramp.¢ On Monday, Oct. 6, the left lane of westbound I-70 will be closed from just west of the Gage Boulevard interchange to just west of the U.S. 75 interchange. The I-70 lane closures, which may vary in direction on a daily basis, will begin at 9 a.m.; lanes are scheduled to reopen to all traffic by 4 p.m. each day. The lane closures are scheduled to continue through Wednesday at the earliest, and Friday at the latest, weather permitting.Advice from Kim Qualls, of KDOT: "Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage. Drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes, if possible."¢ On Saturday, Oct. 11, the westbound right lane of I-70 will be closed from the area of the Sixth Street overpass to just east of the Third Street overpass. On Sunday, Oct. 12, the westbound left lane will be closed through the same area. The lane closures will begin at approximately 8 a.m. and will reopen to all traffic at approximately 7:30 p.m. each day.More advice from Kim Qualls, of KDOT: "Advance message boards will alert drivers to the lane closures. Drivers should expect minor delays and are advised to use alternate routes, if possible. There will be 11-foot width lane restrictions through the project work zone."
