Ohio St. reopens, on brick, from Sixth to Eighth streets
The bricks are back on Ohio Street, and they're ready for traffic to roll.By 3 p.m. Wednesday, the street will be open to through traffic once again from Sixth to Eighth streets. Seventh Street will also reopen. That section has been closed since April as contractors rebuilt its base and restored its original brick surface. The $670,000 project started with stripping away the road's asphalt surface, revealing layers of brick to be salvaged. Then crews removed, cleaned and replaced existing stone curbs and hitching posts. The city contributed $134,000 toward the project, with the remaining cost covered by a grant provided through the Kansas Department of Transportation. While through traffic is welcome on the street once again, some minor work remains, said Mark Thiel, assistant director of public works. Contractors will be in the area in the coming week to complete finishing work, such as backfilling and raking at the curb; planting grass seed behind the curbs is expected to come this spring.
