Palin: Hot or Not

No, I'm not talking about her looks, but of the feisty speech she delivered. I understand that, as with all other candidates, the speech was written for her and she basically read it off the teleprompter, but her poise and delivery were spot-on and captivating. The way she hit out at Obama reminded me or a boxer taking effective jabs at the opponent to wear him down before going for the final knockout. Obama might have finally have met his match in eloquence. For someone who had a lot riding on her credibility, she made herself look like a pro, again, based solely on the speech. The credentials she cited were impressive. I'm naive enough to assume that when she goes on national television that she doesn't make up her accomplishments. There is a lot she needs to prove in the coming weeks, but after last night's smoldering hot speech, she seems ready to take on the challenges that await her.

Lame. Not 1 word about the Economy. Not 1 word about Health Insurance. Not 1 word about a failed Bush administration. Just wait until you lose your Health Insurance and then see how you like it now.The rest of this post is VERY SCARY stuff.Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God." "Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will.""God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

I like the fact that she can relate to the American people better than the average career politician. She's a mom, her husband is a member of a trade union and they have normal issues with their kids. She delivered a powerful speech and it will be interesting to see how she does during the debates. I like Obama as well, but he is a horrible speaker when he isn't in front of a teleprompter. Will Palin be just as bad in that regard? We'll find out.

And, IMHO, McCain selected her out of desperation because she is probably the only anonymous, socially conservative republican with any real upside. She's young, she's a woman, she's to the right of McCain, she will look fresh standing next to Joe Biden during the VP debate, and she's feisty. But, I've heard a lot of rumors and innuendo that might prove troublesome for her if there is any substance to them. McCain, Biden and Obama have all been fully investigated by the press, so she will have all of their attention for the next few weeks.Once again, my questions concern substance? What does she believe? What roll will she seek in a McCain administration? What legislation would she like to see passed? She would have a tie-breaking vote in the Senate, after all.

Jack Hope III 9 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, I would be interested in seeing sources about her religious beliefs, and any legislation she signed or reforms she made while governor. I don't think we'll have to wait long. It sounds like Alaska has more political journalist than caribou right now.

WOW!!! What a difference there is between the Kansas City Star, and the LJWorld. The Star has a pretty much balanced bunch of demolibs and Republicons. Here it is little more than liberal, bleeding-heart, demofascists.I love how the dems have got their backs all up over Gov. Palin's speech. They say she doesn't address education, war, health care, etc. No wonder they hate her - she addresses her own agenda, not that of Dems. Besides, they all got that deep-in-the-gut feeling that she's gonna kick their collective posteriors.Palin is a breath offresh air. She's Republican, but not part of the good old boy system. She has definite ideas about what she's going to change, not just puffed up, grandiose claims to change (without any substance) like Obama has. She is confident, competent, and ready to go to work. My greatest fear is that if Obama wins (getting pretty unlikely), he's gonna sit in the office on day one, spin around in his chair, play with the intercom, and say, "whadda I do now?"It's amazing the difference between the Democratic approach to candidates and that of the Republicans. The dems choose a popular candidate who sounds magnificent in front of a teleprompter, then back him up with a VP candidate whose experience just might provide the substance needed, while the Republicans elect a Pres. candidate who has al the expeience necessary, the willingness to buck the system, then they provide him with a VP candidate whose fresh ideas, intelligence, and abilities will complement the Pres., and add to the "arsenal."Democratic ticket = flambuoyance, smoke and mirrors, and wishful thinkingRepublican ticket = established competence, concrete ideas, and depth of talent

I thought she was smarmy and her sarcasm was over the top. The way that she and the RNC laughed at community organizers reminded me of the "cool kids" in high school making fun of an honors student. It was harsh, unflattering, and less than professional.

micah6_8 9 years, 7 months ago

And you all don't think that Obama, Bite'em, Hilly, and Bill didn't use speech writers and teleprompters? How naive.

3crookedhearts,I know she believes that creationism should be taught alongside evolution, but do you have any proof that she is a young-earth creationist?

for a more local view from a Wasilla, Alaska resident that's known Palin since 1992 when she was mayor... run and google on "Anne Kilkenny"

Speech = Hot. She gave a great speech. She talked about wonderful populist issues that will boost her approval rating and alleviate some doubts about her candidacy. Her other, more important beliefs = Not. I just wished she'd talked about how she believes that rape and incest victims should NOT have legal rights to abortions and how she believes the earth is ACTUALLY 6000 years old and thus make all of the people watching knows how she feels about other matters that may be important to THEM.

mom_of_three 9 years, 7 months ago

I find it hard to call her a "Hockey Mom" when she has been busy holding office for several years. She is still a mom, but I don't think the governor takes her kid to hockey practice anymore. Wasn't her husband supposed to be home with the kids, which would make him "Hockey Dad?" I am not affiliated with any party, but she just rubs me the wrong way. I am a working mom, so that's not it...

LiberalDude 9 years, 7 months ago

Not. There were many lies in her speech and no substance. It was typical Republican BS.

Jack Hope III 9 years, 7 months ago

She is certainly what the GOP needs right now. Someone without Washington/Bush baggage that can give the party a shot in the arm. The Republicans seem to be plodding along like Frankenstein, unaware that they are surrounded by fire. At the very least, Palin has a pulse. However, I am not sure she is going to help in the long run. What ideas does she bring to the campaign? Her views are more inline with the socially conservative wing of the party, so she probably won't attract many of the disaffected Hillary voters. Is there any policy that she brings? She did little but introduce herself last night. I don't count the McCain glorification, or the Obama bashing as substance. If that's all the Republican's have, they've already lost this election. What does she believe in? What laws would she like to see passed? Last night she said that people with autistic children would have her as an advocate in the White House, but what does that mean? Is there a policy behind that, or is it just empty words? Is there some larger assumption to be made about her stance on health care reform? I'd like to hear specifics.I do know that her speech was written by Washington's finest -- and most entrenched -- Republican speech writers, so I don't accept that speech as a good representation of Palin as a VP candidate. It will be interesting to see if there is any substance behind the Hockey Mom. She can obviously body check her opponent, but can she take the puck and score for her team. We'll see in the next few days and weeks.

Great speech, whether you like what she stands for or not. She is bringing life to the presidential campaign and she will bring voters to McCain. She is real and normal. Her life isn't perfect. Just like the rest of us. She hasn't played the political game for years like Biden, McCain and Obama.

BrianR 9 years, 7 months ago

She is and extremist and a whack job. Her "end time" beliefs exclude her from being a legitimate servant of the people.

SpeedRacer 9 years, 7 months ago

Glad you weren't talking about her looks...she reminds me of the Avon lady. What is with the spike heels? Did anyone notice how overdressed (and over coiffed) a lot of the women delegates were?

"Paul Theravarajoo is a Douglas County resident who has agreed to blog about his experience as a first-time voter on LJWorld.com."Maybe not this formerly-politically-apathetic writer, but haven't most other people probably heard hundreds of speeches in his or her lifetime? This was by no means an overly impressive speech, unless the listener identified so much with her rallying points or was so distracted by a physical attraction that he/she failed to recognize the way she repeatedly misused emphasis in the sentences she read. You could practically hear the teleprompter scrolling as she spoke. Granted, not all people are gifted speakers and this was a big stage, but one would have to be delusional to honestly believe that was an outstanding speech. Sounds like a certain blogger and a number of LJ-W posters may have been a little too overly excited by her appearance to closely listen to her delivery and flow.

nicely done Paul.alm, reason for displaying obama's lack of experience: because starting several days ago, he and his robots started questioning Palin's. yes, the least qualified candidate ever nominated by a major party for president is questioning the experience of a woman who has been a very successful: governor; mayor; businesswoman. btw, obama hasn't run a business at all. he hasn't authored a single piece of major legislation, but has authored 2 autobiographies! he did oppose the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in the IL statehouse, I think four times; thus he voted in favor of infanticide. liberal dude says speech was full of lies, but oddly just can't name one...hmmm. wonder who's lying?Only an idiot would see it this way. Your post is ignorant, and wayyyyyyy over the top. Quit smoking dope, it's making you dumb.---once again Deadender accuses somebody of smoking dope! with his obsession about pot, numerous accusations that posters are using pot, just wonder what the role of marijuana is in his life? he certainly thinks a lot about it. brings it up often when it isn't relevant to the discussion. okay, Paul, you wrote well, and again I say I am proud you are my fellow American. Yes, her speech was hot, and today we learned that the last half of it she delivered without the teleprompter because it had scrolled away from her place! makes her accomplishment that much better! funny, the far-left used to care about strong womyn. I guess not anymore. she is a frontier version of Lady Thatcher!
