Recipe ideas for feeding a family on the cheap

Did you notice Wednesday's Hy-Vee ad?  It said dinner for 4, less than $4.  The ad pictured Hy-Vee brand pasta, pasta sauce, garlic bread and packaged garden salad.  The total of these four products was $3.95.

This is great.  So it got me wondering.  What is the least amount you spent on a meal for your family?  I'm talking about a meal you prepared, not off a fast food dollar menu.

I posted a pasta and broccoli recipe recently that was simple and cheap and still nutritious.

It will be fun to see how creative your meals get on the cheap.

We had chicken sausage ($2.99/pkg), salad ($.88/pkg) & petite green beans ($.69/pkg) for dinner tonight. So it was $4.56 + tax for dinner tonight. I do have leftovers so it probably is a bit less money-wise.

I'd have to really think about the cheapest meal. I usually average between $4-5.00/dinner for 4.
