Frugal Fitness

Two of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions are Getting Fit/Losing Weight and Gaining Control of Finances/Reducing Debt. Very admirable…but conflicting if you look at the price of personal trainers, weight loss programs, fitness equipment and gyms.

It just so happens that these are two of my personal ONGOING goals. Most of you know by now that I have a personal blog, SuperJenn.com where I post deals and money saving ideas as well as where I write about family, cooking and other random goodness. But did you know that I co-founded a site called WiiMommies.com ? This is a virtual fitness community that helps support people in their weight loss and fitness goals all year long. Between these two blogs I feel qualified to offer my two cents on some ways to achieve BOTH resolutions without them sabotaging each other!

Its no secret that I own a Nintendo Wii gaming system….and I have used all of the major virtual fitness games to work out and work towards my own personal goals. I’m a strong advocate for virtual fitness, I feel that the upfront investment is well worth the savings you obtain by not paying membership fees…ESPECIALLY if you are also balancing the schedule of little people in your home. However…not everyone has the gaming system…and not everyone is as fortunate as I am to be offered opportunities to review these products for free… so what is a frugal fitness guru to do?

Get. Off. Your. Rump. Its that simple. Get moving. Every bit of movement that you add to your day will benefit your body and your outlook.

Park far from the entrance when you are shopping. You can easily add an extra 500 steps to your day by parking further away from the door than you normally do. I wrote a post earlier this year about other tricks to add extra steps to your day.

When you are talking on the phone…get moving! Walk around your house instead of sitting down. If you have stairs… use the bottom few like ann aerobic step machine and walk them for the duration of your phone call.

When you are standing in the bathroom getting ready in the morning.…do some squats in front of the mirror… and again at night while you are brushing your teeth. If you brush properly…thats an extra 3 min….twice a day of squat exercises!

Cleaning house? You actually get a fairly decent workout by cleaning…if you pick up the pace! And who doesn’t want to get THAT chore over with more quickly? Turn up the music and dance around while you are cleaning…and lunges to your vacuuming routine…hold weights in one hand while you dust with the other…. get creative!

If you have a small child that likes to be rocked…bypass the rocking chair and sway them with small side to side lunges.

Play with your kids! A little more difficult with these sub zero temperatures…but when it is nice…take advantage and head out doors! Run relays…chase them around the backyard playing tag…go for a family walk. Not only will you be getting your move on…but quality family time is very desirable thing as well!

There are also many community fitness classes that you can join in on for a mere fraction of the cost of some gym memberships.

It is not necessary to have a set routine for workout that has been customized just for you. A little self disclipline and some ingenuity will carry you far on your fitness goals…and the only thing getting lighter will be you…not your wallet.
