No plans for guns in district schools

We had a front-page story today about Texas teachers who are allowed to bring guns to school. It looks like the days of rapping knuckles with a ruler are over.Students may think twice when teachers with holsters are patrolling the halls. The town of Harrold, which is located 30 minutes from the closest law enforcement agency, researched its security options for two years before allowing teachers to pack heat, but there are some unanswered questions. How are these teachers trained to balance their responsibilities as educators and the responsibility of holding firearms? What do you do with an aggressive student who may reach for a teacher’s weapon? Those questions won’t have to be answered in Lawrence, where Rick Gammill, the district’s director of special operations, says teachers will not be allowed to carry guns.”We have no plans for anything like that in our district,” he said. The question has never been addressed before, he said.He said school resource officers, supplied by the Lawrence Police Department, provide adequate security.”I’m not really sure that that’s the function of an educator,” Gammill said. “I think that’s a tremendous responsibility they’re placing on those teachers. I think there’s an awful lot of training that would come with that.”But, he said, “We live in an age that I guess people are doing what they feel like they need to.”
