Unofficial enrollment count at LPS sees bigger elementary schools, smaller high schools

Lawrence Public Schools opened their doors for the new year last week and the unofficial numbers are in.Based on an unofficial, preliminary enrollment report from Monday, elementary schools added another 270 kids, junior highs tacked on 64 kids, and high schools lost 53 teenagers. These numbers also include those enrolled at the Lawrence Virtual School in all grade levels.As for individual schools, Hillcrest Elementary had the biggest decline in students, down 84 kids. But, that’s mostly because they added English as a Second Language (ESL) to Cordley, Schwegler, and Sunflower.The biggest jump is at Langston Hughes Elementary with an added 50 kids this school year.The junior highs have fairly stable enrollment from last year, with the biggest boost coming from theLawrence Virtual School, which boasts another 64 kids.Both Lawrence High and Free State have fewer teenagers in the hallways this year.In total, the district has more students this year – 10,820 students taught in both bricks and mortar schools and the virtual school.
