How about another slow overnight in Douglas County? That is right another very slow overnight for all of Douglas County. I know the blog seems to be becoming a bit repetitive every morning but, this is a daily blog and it wouldn't be daily if I didn't blog even on the slow nights.
Again, the overnight call load to Police was full of routine calls; disturbances, noise complaints and car stops. Nothing that involved any weapons and no serious injuries related to any overnight activity in the county.
This seems to be becoming a fairly common occurrence, again last night just after 1:30 a.m. KU Police were called to respond to Memorial Stadium after several subject were seen "stargazing" on the field. The person reporting advised Police of two subjects. Both subjects had left the area prior to arrival of KU Police.

Yet another pretty quiet overnight in Douglas County.
At 1:15 a.m. the National Weather Service office in Topeka issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northwestern Douglas county. Radar indicated a storm moving northeast that was capable of producing up to half dollar sized hail. The set to expire at 2 a.m. however, the National Weather Service determined that the hail core of the storm was going to stay west of Douglas County. The warning was canceled just after 1:30 a.m.
Police responded on most of the normal calls and activity including; disturbances, noise complaints and car stops. The overall calls for service seemed to be a little bit fewer and further between then they usually are. Nothing that involved any serious injuries.
There was only one call that involved a weapon, which was a knife and the subject reported to have been armed with it had left the area prior to Police even being called. There was an arrest for criminal trespassing about 4:30 a.m. this morning. Medics were requested to respond to check a subject with minor lacerations after a disturbance. The victim refused transport from the scene.

Saturday, May 28
Another very quiet morning again today. Police responded on most of the normal calls an activity including; disturbances, noise complaints and car stops. Nothing that involved anyone with any weapons and no one with any injuries. Peaceful would describe the night pretty well and there is nothing wrong with that on a Friday night into Saturday morning. Saying that, I have probably just jinxed tonight.
The only activity that was out of the ordinary worth even mentioning involved several subject who were seen apparently practicing their golf swings near Memorial Stadium. There were three subjects involved and they fled the area before KU Police arrived. Police checked the area and no damage was found to any surrounding structures or fencing.

A very quiet overnight in Lawrence for the most part. Police responded on most of the usual calls along with a non injury accident. Several parking violations along Mass Street and car stops throughout the city.
Police also caught up with a group that attempted to dine and dash at IHOP early this morning. Police were just around the corner when the call was dispatched, they quickly located the suspect vehicle and escorted them back to IHOP to pay the bill.
Just after 6 a.m. Police received a report of a man armed with an AK-47 at the Checkers near 23rd and Louisiana. Police arrived quickly and immediately advised that there was not a weapon involved. As of 6:30, Officers are still on scene there investigating.

The night started off just after 10 p.m. with a report of a domestic disturbance in the 300 block of Northwood Lane. Police responded and found that the disturbance was related to an issue involving, what Police referred to as "a child out of control." Police did what they could to calm the situation. Seems to have worked as there were no other calls for service at this address for the rest of the night.
Wet roads possibly were to blame for a non injury accident in the 800 block of Massachusetts Street at 10:30 p.m. Traffic was restricted for a few short minutes, did not seem to be causing to much of an issue for anyone trying to pass through the area. Police also responded on a second non injury accident in the 1300 block of Ohio just after 2:30 a.m.
Again, the majority of the overnight hours were consumed with the normal calls for Lawrence Police. Car stops, a few 911 hang up calls and at least 4 disturbances. No serious injuries were reported during any activity throughout Douglas County overnight.

A very quiet night in Douglas County this morning. Nothing worth blogging until about 11:30 when LPD responded on a report of gunshots heard in the area of 100 block N 5th Street. Two officers responded to investigate and found the sounds to be only that of fireworks.
The majority of the night was full of car stops, noise complaints and a few false burglary alarms. All in all a very quiet night throughout the county. No serious injuries were reported with any overnight activities.

At 1:45 a.m. the Lawrence Fire Department was called to the 1200 block of Ohio Street. Emergency dispatchers were advised that the fire alarms were sounding and there was smoke visible from one of the apartments. Lawrence Police arrived on scene first and immediately reported that there was a smoke odor in the parking lot. That LPD officer was able to determine which apartment was the source and then advised that upon further investigation the smoke smelled of burnt food. The Fire Department arrived, no one came to the apartment door. LFD forced entry to the apartment. The fire was quickly extinguished and was contained to the stove. Damage was contained to one apartment. No injuries were reported.
Just after 2 a.m. a caller in the 1700 block of W 24th Street reported a homeless man with a gun who was trying to start a disturbance. Police responded quickly to find that the information from the initial call was at least 5-7 minutes old. The man had left southbound on foot before the victim called Police. While on scene with the caller another witness called 911 and reported seeing a subject matching the description walking in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane. Police responded to that area and contacted a man matching the description. It was unclear if that man was taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

Stormy Saturday Night
As we are all well aware a series of severe thunderstorms moved across our area starting about 6 p.m. The first watches were issued for Douglas County starting about an hour before storms began to affect the area. LJWorld Story about the evening storms.
Most of the tornado activity passed by to the south of Lawrence. A Tornado Warning was issued for a storm that was reported to have a tornado on the ground near US 59 Highway and the Franklin County line. That storm was reported to have moved nearly due east and the tornado rose back into the clouds before impacting much civilization.
The weather did not seem to slow down anyone in Lawrence. County officials were reporting pea to ping pong ball sized hail in numerous parts of the county, very near Lawrence and Police were being called to numerous noise complaints. The only report of damage, possibly related to the storms, were in the form of roadway obstructions. The first was on K-10 on the east side of Lawrence and the other was in the 1400 block of Crestline Drive.
Lawrence Police performed a large number of vehicle stops and responded to quite a few noise complaints throughout the city. No serious injuries were reported during any activity overnight in Douglas County.
LPD and LDCFM responded on a report of an injury accident in the 2200 block of Princeton Boulevard just before 4 a.m. The subject involved suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital by an ambulance.
