Consecutive mornings with a vehicle pursuit in Lawrence

Monday into Tuesday pursuit

A 22-year-old, Baldwin City man led Lawrence Police on a high speed car chase that ended in a brief foot chase on the Haskell University campus.

The chase started around 11:50 p.m. Monday near 22nd Street and Louisiana when a Lawrence officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Impala. The driver sped away from the officer, eastbound on 21st Street at a high rate of speed. The officer gave chase and followed the vehicle for a short time before losing sight of the suspect vehicle near 21st Street and Vermont Street.

Other officers responded to the area to help look for the vehicle. One of those officers spotted the vehicle driving in excess of 100 MPH while southbound on Barker Avenue approaching 23rd Street. That officer reported skid marks on the pavement near 22nd and Barker.

Officers moved onto the Haskell University campus and began setting up a perimeter to box in the vehicle. The vehicle was found crashed and abandoned in a grassy common area just north of Oneida Avenue. Officers found that the vehicle had struck several objects, including a sign for one of the buildings and a light pole.

The man spotted a Lawrence Police patrol car spotlighting the area and took off on foot northbound towards the stadium. Officers apprehended him about 200 yards south of the stadium at about 12:05 a.m.. Tuesday. Officers backtracked through the area and located several locations where the vehicle left the roadway and caused damage to property.

Medics eventually transported the man to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to be checked out after he became nauseous and vomited. No other injuries were reported.

He has since been booked into the Douglas County jail and faces a slew of charges including; flee/attempt to elude, reckless driving, driving while suspended, possession of a controlled substance and several counts of leaving the scene and failure to report an accident.
