Lawrence Police responded on a total of 21 disturbances between midnight and 5 a.m..
The first significant disturbance was on Burning Tree Court, north of Kingsmill Road at 12:20 a.m.. A caller reported nearly 50 people arguing and watching a fight in the area. Five LPD units responded and reported numerous people standing around in the area. Officers called for Medics to respond to the scene for one subject with multiple injuries. Medics eventually transported a male in his early 20's from that scene to LMH. The male was said to be missing several teeth as a result of the fight. No arrests have been recorded related to this incident.
At 1:08, Police were called to an address in the 1100 block of Kentucky following a report of an unconscious subject who had been the victim of a battery. Three LPD units went into the scene as Fire Medical crews were staging nearby. Officers did not find anyone unconscious at the scene. While checking near the address for the possibly injured person one officer was battered. That officer called for "emergency assistance" over the radio. A total of nine officers were then involved on the call. After the dust settled, five subjects were arrested. Two of those arrested now face charges of Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer. Others arrested face charges ranging from Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction of the Legal Process to Possession of Marijuana and paraphernalia. No injures were reported.
Just before 1:30 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the 900 block of Emery Road for a single vehicle accident. Officers located the vehicle crashed into a guard rail with one person, said to possibly have a broken leg. Medics reported the injury to be minor. One person was transported by medics away from that scene with what were described as minor injuries. The Sheriff's Office booking logs show a male was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Suspended and an Open Container. It is unclear if that subject is the same person injured or if the injured person was a passenger in the vehicle.
About an hour later, at 2:22 a.m., Police were called to the Magic Lounge, formerly Taste Lounge, at 804 W. 24th Street for a large disturbance involving weapons. Several callers reported as many as 100 people standing outside of the building arguing and one man holding a gun. LPD's call log shows 18 units were involved on the call. Few other details were available. Around the same time, Police requested medics with an emergency response to the McDonalds in the 900 block of W. 23rd Street, it was unclear if the two incidents were related or not. No arrests were reported.
At 2:43 a.m., Police received a report of a several gunshots fired from a vehicle that was northbound on Iowa around 9th Street. The vehicle was described as a dark colored SUV with large rims. Police reportedly caught up with the vehicle a short distance away. Few other details were available. There were no reports any of injuries or arrests.

Good heavens. Hubby and I were discussing this morning how quiet it had been in our neighborhood for the first time ever. It is usually quite rowdy till 2 or 3 a.m. I had assumed it had been quiet everywhere.

Why is this place still a problem? Did they just change the name and keep the rowdies?

The owner of Taste surrendered his liquor license in June of 2012.
Earlier LJWorld report from June 27, 2012,
"State and city officials said Lee Riley, of Topeka, who was listed as the owner of Taste, 804 W. 24th St., had surrendered Taste’s liquor license to the ABC one week ago.
“As a result of the revocation, it is our understanding that Lee Riley will not be eligible to possess a state of Kansas liquor license in the future,” City Attorney Toni Wheeler said."

According to public records, the new liquor license was issued July 24th to an owner registered as "Magic LLC".
Incorporation records for Magic LLC were filed 6/15/2012. The process agent for this LLC is not Mr. Riley, so it is unclear if he remains involved with the business in any way or if the business has been sold to new owners.

"At 2:43 a.m., Police received a report of a several gunshots fired from a vehicle that was northbound on Iowa around 9th Street. The vehicle was described as a dark colored SUV..."
According to an eyewitness - possibly THE only eye witness, "SUV" was never mentioned in the report he made. So, how did it get into this report?

LadyJ, was thinking the same thing. normally we have a dozen or more explosions and gunshots.
last night I heard exactly one.
I guess all the crazies were concentrated in a few small zones.

---Keith, if memory serves, even in the 80's at that address there was a lot of trouble, think it was a country music bar, and then something else.

I was there, often, during it's days as Bullwinkle's Disco, Billy Spear's Country Playhouse, and Just a Playhouse. I don't recall any notable trouble, but back then we didn't have overnight reporting of crimes in the detail we have available now, so maybe I just missed those nights.

---been a scanner user way back. they had a lot of calls back then there. you're right, we didn't have the reporting then. memory is of The Playhouse being the worst., could be wrong.

No, of the 3, The Playhouse was definitely the worst. Just a mean drunk vibe to the whole place. I managed to avoid fight night I guess.

LJW do some research on Magic LLC! Kansas ABC law requires all liquor license to identify the owners. All owners!! Only individuals can have the license.
