At 2:52, Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews were dispatched to the intersection of W. 23rd Street and Naismith Drive for a two vehicle injury accident. Arriving fire crews reported that one person would need to be extricated from the vehicle. One person was seriously injured and another was said to be critically injured. Crews worked for about 20 minutes to extricate the critically injured man from the vehicle. Incident command requested that a LifeStar helicopter respond and land in the Hobby Lobby parking lot. The critically injured man was transported by LifeStar to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, arriving shortly before 4:10 a.m.. The female driver of the second vehicle was transported by Medics to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Police had a stretch of W. 23rd Street from Naismith Drive to Ousdahl closed as they reconstructed the accident. More information on this accident can be found here from Operation 100 News.
Around the same time as the 23rd Street accident, Officers were also dispatched to investigate a non-injury accident in the 1000 block of Ohio Street.
At 7:22, Police were called to check on a report of a vicious "pit bull" in the 200 block of N. 4th Street. One person reported that they were chased by the dog while jogging. Officers and Animal Control checked the area, one officer believed she was familiar with the dog and knew the address where it belonged. No word of if the dog was located. No injuries were reported.
Just before 7:55, Police were called to the area of 23rd Street and Iowa on a report of a road rage incident. Two drivers were reportedly arguing when one of them drove their vehicle into the side of the other driver's vehicle. The victim of the accident called Police and arranged to contact officers near the KU Visitor's Center, and reported the suspect vehicle fled southbound on Iowa from 23rd Street. About a minute later an officer reported locating the suspect vehicle southbound on Iowa approaching 27th Street. The officer attempted to stop that vehicle, which failed to yield briefly. Officers and a County Deputy reported that they had stopped the suspect vehicle on Iowa Street near 31st Street. The driver was detained by Police. No injuries were reported and Police continue to investigate the incident.
