January 29th Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

Another busy morning in Lawrence.

At 3:11 a.m., Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical and Lawrence Police were called to investigate a reported structure fire in the 900 block of Tennessee Street. A caller reported smoke and flames in the top level of the structure. The first fire unit arrived on scene at 3:15 a.m., and reported that there was nothing visible from the exterior of the two and a half story structure. Fire crews made their way to the top level of the structure where they reported “moderate smoke and heat.” Further investigation led crews to a small fire involving a futon mattress. The fire was extinguished quickly and the mattress was removed from the structure. Once the mattress was removed, crews reported dissipating smoke conditions and no heat. No injuries were reported.

Police kept busy with several disturbances, a burglary, a trespass and a drugs call.

Around 5:50 a.m., Lawrence Police spotted a vehicle near Crescent Road and Strong Avenue, that officers reported “appeared to have struck something.” The officer attempted to stop that vehicle. After taking his time to stop a male jumped from the vehicle and ran eastbound towards the Jayhawk Bookstore in the 1400 block of Crescent Road. The man ran through several yards, jumping fences along the way. After running through the area of Potter Lake, Police caught up with the man near Campanile on Memorial Drive. A medic unit was called to the area to check the man for injuries. Medics reported that the man was not injured and that LPD would transport the man to LMH if they deemed it necessary. Another man, reportedly in the vehicle, stood by that vehicle until Police returned. It was unclear if officers located any damage to property nearby and exactly why the man chose to run from officers.
