Another pretty normal night in Lawrence overnight, at least it seemed that way until about 3:20 a.m. Police were called to 2000 Heatherwood Drive after receiving multiple calls about a large disturbance in the parking lot. While police were responding several callers advised that they heard several gunshots fired and then witnessed several vehicles leaving the area. Police arrived to find several vehicles matching the descriptions given by the callers. The vehicles were stopped and the occupants temporarily detained for the investigation. LPD officers advised that most of the subjects in the vehicles were being extremely uncooperative in providing any details. One caller advised dispatchers that she believed the shots were fired at a fleeing vehicle just prior to LPD’s arrival. A total of nine officers worked this incident. Several subjects were detained on scene, no arrests were made and no weapons were recovered.

Just a few minutes after the few details about the Heatherwood Drive incident started to come together, a Douglas County Sheriff Deputy spotted a vehicle driving in the 3000 block of Iowa that had a shattered rear windshield. The Deputy stopped the vehicle believing that it was involved in the Heatherwood Drive incident and was possibly shot out during the disturbance. After further investigation and assistance from LPD, it was determined that the damage to this vehicle was a result of a different disturbance. This disturbance was in the 2300 block of W 26th Street in Lawrence. Police responded to that address and dispersed the lingering parties. The vehicle’s owner did not know who damaged the vehicle.

After those two incidents wrapped up, it was back to the usual every Friday night into Saturday morning calls of mostly noise complaints.
