July 31st Overnight Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

Lawrence Fire was kept pretty active early this morning. First with a “large” dumpster fire in the 1100 block of Louisiana Street just before 1:30 a.m. LPD was also requested to the scene as Fire crews needed to run some hose line across Louisiana. No structures were in any danger and no injuries were reported. About two hours later and a half mile away, Lawrence Fire was called to another dumpster fire in the 900 block of Rhode Island. Again no structures were in any danger and no injuries were reported.

Just before 2 a.m. a Lawrence Police Officer on routine patrols came across several subjects who were shooting off fireworks in the 1000 block of Kentucky. The subjects scattered in different directions when they saw the patrol car approaching. It did not sound like the Officer was able to catch up with any of the involved subjects.

About 2:15 a.m. Douglas County Deputies along with Wakarusa Fire and a LDCFM Medic unit were called to the intersection of Highway 59 and North 1000 road on reports of a female standing in the middle of the highway. Just before Deputies arrived on scene emergency dispatchers advised the responding units that the caller was now saying the woman had laid down on the highway. Several vehicles stopped, it did not sound like any of the drivers approached the woman. Deputies arrived and quickly requested Fire/Medical to respond. The woman was transported, it was unclear if she was injured or was suffering from a medical condition.

As deputies were working the situation on Highway 59, Lawrence Police were responding to 11th and Massachusetts after a caller advised emergency dispatchers of a male subject walking around with a 2×4 and a crowd gathering around him. The caller believed that there was about to be a fight. As Lawrence Police arrived, several subjects ran. Police were able to gather a description of the man that was reportedly threatening others with the 2×4. It did not sound as though Police have yet caught up with him. At one point the Officers on scene did request an additional Officer to respond when the crowd that had gathered was refusing to leave the area. The crowd did disperse without further incident.
