August 19th Overnight Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

An extremely busy overnight with the storms that rolled through the area last night.

Around 10:45 p.m. Lawrence Police received a 911 call about two vehicles that were seen “ramming each other” in the 500 block of Louisiana Street as they traveled southbound. The vehicles were last seen by the caller traveling southbound through the intersection of W 6th Street and Louisiana Street. Police responded to the area and were unable to locate the vehicles.

Just after Police finished checking for those vehicles, dispatchers began receiving calls of tree limbs across the roadways and power lines down throughout the county. Law Enforcement Officers removed the tree limbs that they could safely move out of the roadway and were forced to leave the others until Public Works could be called out to clear the roads.

The Fire Department was kept busy as well responding on reports of down power lines. Firefighters stood by on several lines and other electrical equipment that was sparking or arcing if they felt it posed a potential fire risk.

At one point overnight, Westar’s website showed nearly 7,000 customers without power in the county. As of 6 a.m. this morning, that number is down to just over 3,000 customers.

Lawrence Police performed a number of bar checks as well as responding on many of the normal overnight calls. Noise complaints, vehicle stops and a few disturbances.

The activity blogged here is only a sampling of some of the things that Douglas County Law Enforcement and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical respond on.
