Several Police chases occurred overnight, one for nearly 5 miles and another for just a couple blocks.

The first began just after midnight and involved Kansas Transit Authority Troopers on eastbound Interstate 70. Troopers spotted a vehicle that was unable to maintain a single lane on the turnpike. The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, which then picked up speed and continued driving recklessly. Speeds at one time reached 110 miles per hour with the driver still unable to keep the car in a single lane. The vehicle came to a stop at the 201.9 milepost, which is near the N McDonald Drive interchange. Three subject ran from the car and were all apprehended within just a few short minutes. One subject was on the receiving end of a Trooper’s Taser. That subject was treated by Lawrence Medical for the Taser deployment and drug/alcohol use and was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

Lawrence Police did respond when the subjects fled from the car but were not involved in the subjects being apprehended.

After that chase settled it was back to a normal Lawrence Saturday morning. A few bar checks, noise complaints and disturbances. Nothing very unusual and no serious injuries were reported with any of this activity.

Just after 4 a.m. a KU Police Officer on patrol near 13th Street and Jayhawk Boulevard reported having his vehicle nearly sideswiped. The Officer did call out that he was in pursuit of the vehicle eastbound on 13th Street and that he believed the driver to be intoxicated. Speeds were reported to have reached nearly 70 miles per hour and the officer was not able to get close enough to the vehicle to report a license plate number. The suspect vehicle was last seen eastbound on 13th Street approaching Tennessee.

Minutes later, Lawrence Police received a report of a single car accident at 6th Street and Kentucky. LPD responded to find a vehicle matching the description given by the KUPD Officer. KUPD responded and confirmed that it was the same vehicle that they were after. Lawrence Fire/Medical also responded and treated the driver for what were described serious but non life threatening injuries. The driver was transported to the hospital for further treatment.
