Staff Sgt. Roy P. Lewsader Jr., 36, died Saturday in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced in a Monday news release. Lewsader was wounded when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his vehicle. He was assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division based at Fort Riley.(Des Moines Register) Body of Quad Cities soldier returns: he body of an Iowa soldier who died in Iraq Friday arrived at the army base in Fort Riley, Kan., Monday, the same day the Department of Defense released information surrounding his death. Pfc. Michael P. Pittman, 34, of Davenport, died June 15 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Pittman was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan. He had been serving in Iraq since February. It was his first deployment. Pittman had recently re-enlisted two days prior to the attack. He and his wife Jennifer, and their four children, moved from Davenport to Fort Riley Aug. 25, 2005, shortly after he first enlisted in the Army.
