70 by the first of April?

First let’s melt the snow. I doubt it’ll take more than another day or two. With highs this week 20+ degrees above freezing, with a little late-March sunshine, and with some rain showers thrown in, the snowpack is poised to take a real beating.

Good riddance. Let’s turn our attention to legitimate Springtime weather.

There are dynamical and statistical relationships between the state of the tropical atmosphere and our North American weather that currently suggest above-average temperatures will be around in early April. In particular, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is rolling around the tropics in a way that, by the turn of the month, teleconnects well with the Central Plains getting 70s.

We shall see, of course. But there are signs (somewhat independent of the global dynamical models – which in isolation are nearly useless beyond a week) that point in this direction.

Go Spring!
