Severe Weather Chance For Lawrence Friday

We are dealing with a fairly strong upper-level storm that will slide into the region for Friday. While we may see some sun during the day, we are looking at t-storms developing for the afternoon and evening.

The timing is dependent (as usual) on several key factors. We will have ample moisture in place with temperatures into the 70's. This will give us plenty of instability for thunderstorms to develop.

I expect most of the storms to fire in the afternoon from Nebraska, Eastern Kansas with the strongest storms well south into Arkansas. The biggest question is how strong the storms over NE Kansas will be. The biggest factor for our immediate area will likely be large hail and high wind, although the isolated tornado threat can't be ruled out.

We will keep our eyes on the storm situation, so stay tuned to Channel 6 and the LJWorld for the latest.

riverdrifter, That is true that the best potential for severe in the immediate area well is to our north. Flooding of course could be a big problem regionally with 1.27"+ of rain already on the ground.

much rather have a nice, big thunderous storm than this all-day steady rain garbage.

I agree, Matt. I recorded 1.70 in BC today.

personally, I think north lawrence got more than 1.27"!

tornado risk, big hail risk. how about the poisonous frog risk? or the blood from the sky risk? what about the honeydo list risk? or you know, the stars dropping from the sky risk???

I just don't think Matt has been conprehensive here.

I mean, how can I trust a prediction that doesn't include fire-breathing lizzards, knights in shining armor, or damsels in distress either?

gnome, I don't typically include threats that I don't feel exist for severe weather. Large hail, flooding and wind are my biggest concerns with this setup. We could see some individual supercells form depending on how much sun and heating we pick up this afternoon. If this happens there is a risk of tornado development. It isn't the factor that I am focusing on, but it is a concern that I have with this storm system.
