Dry air temperature swings

A strong storm will develop over the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Region this upcoming weekend. Northeast Kansas will be on the tail end of this storm. Winds will actually blow in from the west later Saturday and Sunday. Those west winds will be quite dry, too.

I know I have mentioned this before: dry air warms up and cools down quickly. When dry air comes in the from west, down the east slopes of the Rocky Mountains, it actually warms up. We saw this a lot last winter. When this happens, we can get some really warm temperatures for brief periods of time. Good news, however, is that those warm temperatures are not accompanied by humid air. Bad news is that those warm, very dry winds are often quickly replaced by cold, dry winds. Those winds of change are coming, folks.

As it looks like right now, winds will sharply change later Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening as a cold front sweeps through Northeast Kansas. Those winds will be from the north behind the cold front, and gusty. After early Sunday afternoon high temperatures well into the 80’s, I expect temperatures to struggle to top 70°come Monday. Again, owe the temperature swing to dry air.

So, while temperatues have been very nice as of late, expect a quick burst of warmth this upcoming Sunday. However, once you see the trees bend towards the south (wind coming from the north), then say goodbye to the warm stuff. Again, because the air will be dry, there will likely not be any shower or storms with the wind change. See, even dry air can be exciting.

How do you feel when the temperature changes quickly? How do you feel when the air is really dry? Do you like temperature changes without storms?
