Another Temperature Swing For Kansas!

Temperature swings are all too common here in Kansas. Friday’s high temperature topped out at 61° before a major cold front swung through and turned the wind to the north and drove temperatures down 19° in nearly two hours. It isn’t that it was not expected, it is that our perception of temperature is relative. I saw parents head to the park with their kids to burn off some restless energy on an almost spring-like day, only to have a substantial temperature drop in just a matter of moments bring kids and parents alike indoors to find a coat. A coworker of mine asked me if they needed a jacket to run to another building, to which I replied “No. Temperatures are nearly 60°.” The problem is they neglected to tell me that they would be gone for two hours. The front that dropped our temperatures a mere 31° in four hours is the first of many cold air masses that will settle into the area over the next week. I would be surprised to see temperatures above freezing for Saturday with a mild warm-up on Sunday. Next week will bring two more cold air masses this direction that will drop temperatures back to the mid 30’s on Monday and eventually to highs in the low 20’s or teens come Wednesday. If there is a silver lining to this cloud, it is the fact that there isn’t much of a chance to pick up any snow or sleet over the next week. The chances that we have are negligible (less than 25% chance of snow) which will allow our focus to be on the frigid temperatures and bitter wind chills.
