Friday’s Snow The First Of Many Rounds

In a way, Thursday was fool’s gold for many of us. Temperatures on Thursday bumped up to 67°… only 3° from the current record for that date. Then comes Friday. Temperatures plummeted into the 30’s for daytime highs and kept dropping from there.I hate to say it, but it is only the beginning of the cold weather for the next four or five days, so you better bundle up. The pattern that we are in has two parts. First, a strong low is churning off the coast of California… yes, California. It is strong enough to propel moisture from the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico into Kansas as well as send ripples of energy through the atmosphere to spawn snow-showers. Then couple that with cold air diving out of Canada, and you have the recipe for the typical January that we are used to in northeast Kansas. There are only slim chances of snow for the next 24-36 hours, but after that the chances are going to pick up. Saturday morning you should expect some light snow to linger mostly to our south. Sunday night into Monday promises to bring a more substantial snowfall to the region as the next round of energy shifts into the area. That particular system has the power to drop several inches of snow into the area (1-3″ is the current trend, but could go up as this system continues to develop). It looks like the snow will come to an end early on Tuesday. The light at the end of the tunnel is Wednesday with temperatures trying their best to return to the 40’s. Until then, bundle up and try to stay warm.
