Is This What The Groundhog Means?

I suppose it is the time of year that we are in, but these big swings in temperatures tend to wear people down. We go from the 70’s to the 30’s in a blink of an eye, and start the process over again. But while Phil’s prediction on winter is accurate when you look at the calendar (6 more weeks… I counted it up myself) we are about to enter into a perfect set-up for thunderstorms. Here’s what I mean. The jet stream is really the driving force behind our weather. It works as a dividing line between the arctic air to the north and warmer, more moist air to the south. Right now, the jet stream is meandering overhead. That means that we are in a transition period where the cold air is going to move to the east and the warmer air slides into place. With that warm air brings more moisture. When you have temperatures that are well above average coupled with an abundance of moisture, any cold front that moves through provides an opportunity for thunderstorms.Keep in mind, that even if we see thunderstorms, it doesn’t mean that they will be severe. That all depends on a number of factors that range from jet stream location to moisture content. The current trend for our forecast is for a slightly below average temperature for your Wednesday and a big jump come Thursday. The warm-up continues for Friday and Saturday. We do have a cold front expected to move into the region on Sunday that could spark a few thunderstorms for Sunday and Monday. While the cold front is going to cool us down, we are likely only dropping into the mid or low 50’s. While the groundhog’s forecast is right according to the calendar, we are slowly transitioning to spring!
