Small earthquake rattles area just across Nebraska border

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 3.5 magnitude earthquake at 8:53 Wednesday night just across the Kansas-Nebraska border, due north from Topeka.

The earthquake occurred just over 3 miles beneath the earth’s surface, and was felt by more than 90 surrounding residents.

The central plains has a history with small to moderate earthquakes. The strongest earthquake to strike within the Kansas border happened on April 24, 1867. The shock was felt over 300,000 square miles in numerous other states. Several folks were injured and there was moderate damage done to buildings in Topeka and Lawrence.

A 2-foot wave was created by the quake that traveled down the Kansas River. Over the past 120 years, this region has been affected by more than ten quakes.
