Out in the Elements

I’m often on TV talking about the flash flooding at 23rd and Ousdahl, here in Lawrence.Sunday, for the first time, I got to experience it myself. Sarah Jones was at the office covering the severe weather and torrential rainfall, while I was enjoying my evening. My husband and I were downtown in the car when the hail started. Wow, I’d forgotten how loud that can be in the car! Only pea-size hail, but very loud. We were driving to south Iowa Street to meet friends for dinner, and 19th street is obviously closed, so we took 23rd street, not thinking of the potential flooding. Luckily the water is only collecting at that intersection and it is not rushing water (from a flooded stream, which I often warn people NOT to drive through). We were driving along 23rd and then, boom, deep water and no place to turn around. We had to keep going. We passed one car that stalled. But somehow my low-riding Chevy made it through. If we would have gotten stuck, I bet the water was deep enough to have gotten into the car if we would have needed to get out of the car. From now on, my television coverage of 23rd and Ousdahl will be accompanied by memories. Sunday/Monday rainfall numbers: Sunday from 6pm – 7pm: 1.14″ Then an additional 0.33″ late Sunday night and Monday morning
