Near-Earth Asteroids

I suppose this falls under the “if you don’t see it, it isn’t happening” category for most of us. I frequent a lot of websites when I am creating my forecast, but after I am done, I often look at a few sites that may have some interesting facts that may not pertain directly to our weather. One of these sites is SpaceWeather.com.What I found interesting is they have a section on Near-Earth Asteroids. A startling number of asteroids that are passing near the Earth are considered Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). That is a scary thought!A PHA is defined as a space rock larger than 100 meters that come within 4.65 million miles of the Earth. (Okay that is like throwing a dart at a knat from across the room…. blindfolded, but still in astronomical terms it is pretty close!)The website stated that on June 27th, there are 959 PHA’s. They also list a number of the close encounters for the month of June… check it out! It is interesting to see how close some of these asteroids get to the Earth!
